Project: Toxicity Identification Evaluation/ Toxicity Reduction Evaluation.

Description: Three outfalls exhibited periodic toxicity to Ceriodaphnia dubia and Pimephales promelas. Samples were collected weekly for two months. Samples were screened for toxicity and if present a Phase I & II TIE were conducted on the sample exhibiting toxicity. The toxicity was determined to be chronically non-persistent; however, the conclusions identified either surfactants and or oxidizable compounds as the causative toxic agent(s).

Toxicity Identification Evaluation conducted on the waste streams comprising the final effluent. Metals were found to be the toxic agents. A Water Effects Ratio was conducted on the final waste stream using Cu and Zn, the primary metals of concern, in order to determine the amount that could be added to the final effluent without causing adverse effects to the environment.

Description: Toxicity from the ANL facility was exhibited to Ceriodaphnia dubia and Pimephales promelas. Samples were collected weekly for six months. Samples were screened for toxicity using the species above in an acute screening non-renewal test. The toxicity was determined to be contributed from the addition of the treated sanitary sewer discharge to the discharge from the wastewater treatment plant.
